• Robbed at the hotel by an elevator operator and a prostitute
• Makes a date with Sally Hayes
• Buys the "Little Shirley Beans" record for Phoebe
• Takes Sally to a play, "The Lunts", and to a skating rink at Radio City
• Meets Carl Luce at The Wicker Bar where, getting very drunk
• Visits Phoebe after breaking "Little Shirley Beans"

Holden and Phoebe

• Sneaks into the family apartment to see Phoebe
• Confesses getting kicked out of school
• Phoebe gives Holden her Christmas money
• Leaves home to meet a former teacher, Mr. Antolini
• Ends up sleeping on a bench at Grand Central Station
• Writes Phoebe a letter asking to meet at the Museum of Natural History
• Phoebe brings a suitcase to the museum, insisting she run away, too
• Walk to Central Park where Phoebe rides the carousel
• The story fades into the present where Holden explains he "got sick" and is resting
